The Grass Isn't Always Greener When Student Fees are Involved
Last week, we brought you a story about the left's aggressive push to take money out of your pocket to fund sustainability initiatives on campuses in Texas. This week we'll highlight the ways the left is working to advance its agenda in Florida.
As of late, sustainability is the buzz word the left is peddling to college students. Considering our generation grew up with Captain Planet and "reduce, reuse, recycle" emblazoned on everything from water bottles to t-shirts, it is no surprise they're having some success.
College students should be warned however, the left's intentions are not as pure as they would lead you to believe.
In Florida for example, a non-student organization the Southern Energy Network has been working to garner student support for a "Student Green Energy Fund" which would be paid for out of student fees. The "Student Green Energy Fund" would be used to fund energy efficient projects on college campuses throughout Florida.
Dan Cannon, Florida organizer for the Southern Energy Network, states in an FSView article: (emphasis my own)
“There are over eight active campuses working on it currently, and the idea is the bill would be passed through state legislature and give individual campuses the right to implement a student green energy fund.”
The Southern Energy network is merely using Florida students as pawns in its astroturf campaign to lobby the state legislature for more environmental regulations at Florida universities.
So far, the Southern Energy network has focused its efforts on several Florida campuses: New College, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, Florida State University, University of West Florida, Rollins College, Florida Gulf Coast University, University of South Florida, Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University.
If you are a student at one of these universities, you can fight back!
The Texas Aggie Conservatives (TAC) at Texas A&M have launched a creative counterattack of activism to fight green fees in Texas. Mocking the left and their initiatives, the students are posing as "green police" handing out "tickets" with information detailing why students should vote NO on the fee. The Facebook event for the activism has over 100 members.
If you would like to fight against a hike in student fees on your campus contact the CampusReform.org staff member in your area for assistance.
